JungleDisk - online backup

Boys and girls .. after hearing the horror stories of others who have had their laptops stolen (with backup CDs in the bag), hard drive crash, or just a mis-placed thesis - I figured it was high time a while back to take some precautions.

After doing some research I stumbled across JungleDisk - for a tiny $20 I had an app that would upload my data to secure servers bit by bit.  I'm up to around 9Gb so far and counting (lots of family photos Smile)  All of this is stored on Amazon servers which, I can only assume, are backed up yet again to the nth degree.  The storage and data transfer costs are averaging out to be around $1 month for me.

It seems JungleDisk 2.0 has been launched - as a special they're inviting family and friends of  currently registered users to take a copy for $10.  You're all family, right?  This link will give out up to 10 registrations at $10 - but if that's not enough to make you hurry, it also expires in 30 days.

The service itself is

The service itself is provided entirely in the US (and more recently in
Europe I think too, but under a different pricing model), but in theory
should be accessible anywhere.

Oh! You're right... I hadn't figured that out.

Just Back up and keep out!

jeje wow!! isn't it amazing how much we now depend on abstract things such as data?!  I'd recomend you to backup (maybe you should invest in a portable disk) or if you have few Gigas with DVD's (it works 4 my programs and pornSealed)...  Just remember, backups are supposed to be kept safe, not in your back packs Wink

One big  Huge everyone!!! at least is weekend  again ^_-

Meh, I have too much data

Meh, I have too much data for a service like that. That is why I almost never use the 10 gigs that came with my .mac account.

I've been really eye balling the Data Robotics Drobo. Any thoughts?

Unusual..

That's puzzling .. I thought it was only Australia that was left out of the loop in things like this?

Last time I've heard about

Last time I've heard about this service, it was not available at the jungle (i.e., on South America, where I'm back since last week).

Unlimited

How long? That depends enormously on your connection speed - I had a 512k line, but rarely got beyond 170k upload speed.

Looking at the logs from my laptop backup (here at work), my initial backup of 600Mb took 1hr 40 mins.  I would anticipate slightly better performance for a bunch of larger files instead of hundreds of tiny text files.

As for the limit - there really is none.  You pay a storage fee of 15c per Gb per month.  There's a transfer fee as well based upon number of requests and amount of bandwidth.  My total fees amount to around $1.70 per month.  The bulk of my data is pretty static (around 8Gb in photos), although there are some files on my work laptop that get touched and therefore backed up daily (ie. config files).

For my backups at home I ran the PC overnight and it would typically upload a few hundred Mb at a time.  Now that the initial upload is complete I should only need to leave it running for perhaps another hour or so each time I power it up to do some online banking.  Uploads can be throttled back to avoid chewing your bandwidth and the extra processing by the PC was surprisingly miniscule (a big problem with other online backup tools I tried).

In the event that something nasty happened to G-G I have my regular site-wide backups stored this way.  The important factor for me is that I don't need to remember to do it - I can also set up the inlaws on my Amazon account to protect them from their own mistakes.

Oh, I should also mention .. For an extra $1 per month you can activate partial backups and web access to your files.  I did that with mine also and have used it a few times to grab photos from my home PC.

How long do complete backups

How long do complete backups take and how much space do you get? I have a rather large iTunes library as well as a 10 gb Home folder that I would love to backup online but I only have about 512kbps upstream. Right now i'm doing incremental backups to a RAID array, but nothing off site.
