iJealousy over the bf's new toy

Well it's arrived at last, and yes, I have one!

Actually, I don't .. But the boyfriend does, and seeing I'm the techy one in the relationship it was up to me to get it all sorted.  Woo hoo!

Surprisingly, we only had to wait 10 minutes outside a store prior to opening time.  The 'crowd' was quite civilised, bar one little bastard who ignored his place in the queue and bolted upstairs before the rest of us had strolled through the door.  As we got upstairs ourselves we found staff galore - it was all a bit of an anti-climax really, but probably because we'd gone to purchase it on a Saturday instead of 12:01am Friday like the rest of the country.

How does it perform? Well I have a Palm Treo myself and am very happy with it.  Nice phone, sturdy, takes an OK photo, fully featured, integrates with my PC nicely.  Beaut.

But having taken this new thing home - I now have a serious case of iJealousy.  This Apple gadget is beyond cool.  Sleek, smooth and fast, it was all too easy to set up and before we'd driven off I'd already had it downloading the bf's mail at 3G speeds.  The Google Maps found our location with a pulsing blue dot in a matter of seconds, but admittedly it has no voice instructions to actually take a driver somewhere.  I did have a problem with sync'ing the Calendar back to Outlook - but it seems I'm not alone in that problem anyway.  Reading online forums, there appear to be plenty of others facing the same issue.

All in all I think it's a great toy phone.  Would I have one myself? Sure - except one of my favourite phone apps is only available in a Windows version so I'd have to give that up.  Apart from that, my Treo is hardly 'old' yet so I really can't justify the expense.

Well .. that's my report done.  Anyone else had a chance to play with this thing yet?

Oooh .. I asked the actual owner for his comments too:

my comments, everybody who sees the phone loves it.  Oh, maybe mention that I did offer it to the b/f some time ago  :))  We'll get you one at some stage in the future.

Hi Brandon, Fortunately

Hi Brandon,

Fortunately I'm not that much into mobile music :-) I am however concerned about sync-ing to Outlook etc.....  For my purposes it's perfect.

Windows Mobile sucks,

Windows Mobile sucks, especially if you want a music player, like me.

Personally I would go for

Personally I would go for the HTC touch pro at this stage:

It's got a slide out keyboard ;-)

Love competition laws :-)

Over here in Australia there's a lot of laws surrounding competition in the marketplace.

Apple could have sold exclusively through one carrier easily enough - but they must also have sold it outright without the need to stick with any one carrier.  In the end it proved easier to sell it on contract through all the major players.  The carrier I'm with happens to be the least competitive on their data plans (kinda sucks) and I heard the queues at other carriers were at least double!

I've heard that you can

I've heard that you can actually buy it without needing a contract with AT&T, but it costs you around $599 for the 8GB model and $699 for the 16GB model. Not fun times. And sadly the only reason I didn't buy an iPhone is because it is with AT&T. I don't really like them. So instead I got the LG Dare for Verizon which is Verizon's attempt to compete with iPhone. Hopefully when the next gen iPhone comes out, Apple will grow brains and not set it to one manufacturer so that the rest of humanity in the US can actually purchase one.

Yup, they either make you

Yup, they either make you sign up with a plan or verify your ATT account. And you need to be careful too. They added the 5 dollar text messaging to my plan without even asking me (the guy who helped me as an asshole, txting on his POS blackberry while he was processing my order). Ended up having to call ATT to get it all straightened out. The sales douche's know nothing.

Phone is great though, especially the 3g speed and Push support. Its a lot lighter than the old one, and I kinda miss the solid metal feel. Battery life sucks, I barely got a day of moderate use with Push turned on, much better with push turned off and 3g disabled (when not in use, that is). Another thing, it won't charge in some iPod speaker docks, one of them being THE ONE MADE BY APPLE! It will say charging is not supported. My old iPhone had no problem. Sound quality is fantastic, much louder in both the ear piece and speaker. Reception is also much much much better, probably because of the plastic backing (I am so happy I can make calls in my living room now!).

But I've heard the new

But I've heard the new Phones won't be sold unless a contract with AT&T is signed on the act of shopping. Is it true?

I didn't feel like waiting

I didn't feel like waiting in line, so I pre-ordered one the day after it was released, should be here on Wed. I'm just looking forward to the potential to combine my GPS into it (i'm keeping my fingers crossed Garmin or TomTom will release the software for it) and being able to actually surf the web and not struggle to pick up a wifi signal. Not that I didn't love my old iPhone (which I sold for a tidy profit by unlocking it, so upgrading is practically free for me :D )
